Meaning of Information Technology

   About Information Technology

Information Technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

Today, the term information technology has ballooned to encompass many aspects of computing and technology, and the term is more recognizable than ever before. The information technology umbrella can be quite large, covering many fields. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases.

A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems.IT When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is information technology, or "infotech". Information Technology (IT) is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. Presumably, when speaking of Information Technology (IT) as a whole, it is noted that the use of computers and information are associated.

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, dies at age 50

Los Angeles: Pop star Michael Jackson died Thursday following a cardiac arrest at his home in Los Angeles, officials said. He was 50.
The King of Pop, whose life of stardom and scandal kept him permanently in the headlines, was found unconscious at his rented Bel Air mansion and was rushed to the UCLA Medical Centre.

"We were notified by LAPD that Michael Jackson was transferred from his house to the hospital," said Los Angeles County Coroner Fred Corral. "He was unresponsive and pronounced dead at approximately 2.26 this afternoon."

Corral said an autopsy would be performed to check for toxicology and other problems. The results are to be released Friday.

A large crowd formed outside the medical centre and his home, playing Jackson's music, as news crews and reporters jostled for stories and as news helicopters hovered overhead.

Corral said that he had suffered a cardiac arrest and local media reported Jackson had not been breathing when paramedics reached him. Reports from hospital first said he was in a coma, before numerous media reported his death.

"We are just stunned - I can't tell you what has taken place but everyone is just stunned," family spokesman Brian Oxman told CNN. Referring to reports that Jackson was in ill health, Oxman said he "feared and warned about" the level of medication that Jackson was taking, though he stressed that "he was in fine condition. We have never seen him in any kind of weakened condition".

Jackson is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II.

Jackson had appeared increasingly frail and financially-challenged in recent years. Despite earning hundreds of millions of dollars he was reported to be $500 million in debt thanks largely to his eccentrically extravagant lifestyle.

Jackson's rented home was roped off after paramedics arrived to transport the King of Pop to the hospital.

Born in 1958 in Gary, Indiana, Jackson was a child star with the Jackson 5 and became one of the most successful recording artists of all time with the release of the album "Thriller" in 1982 - the best selling album of all time. His successful songs redefined the modern music video and forced MTV to start showing black performers, and paved the way for the acceptance of rap and hip-hop as mainstream musical styles.

Elevated to the stardom level of the Beatles and Elvis, he also introduced a new level of mega-stardom through his music and clothes, his dance moves, and his massive live concert tours.

"Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of colour - way before Tiger Woods, way before Oprah Winfrey, way before Barack Obama," said black leader Al Sharpton. "Michael did with music what they did in sport politics and music. No controversy will erase his impact."

He raised consciousness about the plight of Africa with the supergroup recording "We Are the World" in 1985. But after that most of his headlines were dogged by scandal - from his marriages to Lisa Presley and former nurse Debby Rowe, to his eccentric lifestyle behind the gates of his fantasy childhood estate, named Neverland, after the setting of the book Peter Pan.

He managed to settle an allegation that he molested a boy there in 1993, but was forced to face a sensational "trial of the century" 10 years later. He was ultimately acquitted of the charges, but the exposure caused huge damage to his career and financial situation.

At the time of his death he had been preparing for a 50-concert run in London that was meant to represent his comeback and secure his financial future.

Secret questions that protect e-mails are vulnerable

Bangalore: A new study in the U.S. has revealed that it is very simple for hackers to answer the security questions that protect e-mail accounts, reports New Scientist, an international science magazine.

The researchers at Microsoft finds it and are based on an analysis of an experiment involving 32 e-mail users. What's the name of the school you attended? What is the first name of your favourite cousin? These are the kind of questions asked in case email account holders forget their password.

In the experiment acquaintances of the e-mail users, with whom they normally share login details were asked to guess the answers to such questions. The participants managed to guess correctly one-fifth of the time, raising questions over how secure this system really is.

A second study by Microsoft has also suggested a more secure alternative, which is to rely on trusted friends to vouch for you if an account becomes locked. "Securing webmail is important because e-mail accounts typically allow an attacker access to other accounts, for example, eBay and Amazon. If I can recover these passwords via your e-mail account then I can spend the balance of your credit card on flat-screen TVs," said Ross Anderson of Cambridge University.
Stuart Schechter and Rob Reeder of Microsoft have proposed a new system, whereby users can select several 'trustees'. When a user gets locked out of his or her account, the trustees of the account holder will be asked to download a 'recovery code' and then the user has to collect such codes from multiple trustees before he or she can unlock the account.
Around 19 Hotmail users tried the new system and 17 of them managed to regain access to their Hotmail accounts. The success rate was 90 percent as compared to the 80 percent success rate of the secret question system.
The new method should be an optional choice for users and should not replace the secret questions approach, according to Anderson. The idea has promise, said Reeder, however pointing out that this is not a new idea.

For instance, the UID numbers and the database will be linked to agencies such as the Election Commission of India and the Income Tax Department, which deal with the general public and issue special number cards such as voters photo identity cards in the case of ECI and PAN Cards in the case of IT Departments.
In addition, it will be used for providing services under government schemes such as the public distribution system, and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for families living below the poverty line. It will also be used for delivering financial and other assistance to the needy.
Mr. Nilekani has been chosen to head the authority considering that the project will be based on various tools and techniques of Information Technology and there will be need to keep updating the system.

Thanks to government of India for choosing an eminent person like Nandan Nilekani as Chairman of National Authority for Unique Identity. Even though its a great loss for Infosys, our nation gets the best out of it. Sir we all are proud of you. All the best and always with you.

Smart cards replace driving licenses in Karnataka

Bangalore:The Karnataka Government newly launched a new system in the Transport System which is replacing smart cards instead of driving licenses.
Karnataka's transport department turned tech savvy Thursday by launching 16-kb microchip embedded 'smart cards' to replace driving licenses and vehicle registration booklets.
Driving license holders and vehicle owners will have to change over to the smart cards within two years.
The smart card, costs Rs.200, which will prevent forgery in licenses and registration booklets, Transport Minister R. Ashok said at a function at which Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa launched the microchip embedded plastic card.
The chip can store large amount of information about the details of the driver/owner and can keep record of traffic violations, conviction and details of road accidents involving the driver and the vehicle.
Five regional transport offices in Bangalore began issuing the smart cards Thursday. By September, the remaining 50 regional transport offices in other parts of Karnataka will also start issuing these cards.
Smart cards are better when compared to driving licenses. Please encourage this new system.

Bing compared to Google

Is Bing really capable of stinging Google?

Bangalore: Microsoft launched Bing on June 3rd this year, a renamed and reformed version of its search engine Kumo, with an intention to increase its hold on the search market, easily searching latest technology news, updates, notifications etc. providing to all where an over 70 percent share is with Google.

Bing is a search engine that finds and organizes the answers you need so you can make faster, more informed decisions

On the home page of Bing, there is a specific feature for search optimization where an Indian user can select between two options such as 'Show all' and 'Only from India'. If one checks any option before giving search words, the results returned will be optimized on the basis of the selection of the option. When a search on "Bikes' resale in Bangalore" was attempted by siliconindia news bureau on Bing with the 'show all category' marked, there was only one relevant link in the first ten results where one could find some bikes. But the same search on Google fetched all the ten results relevant and satisfying.
But in Bing's case, a user can try "Only from India" option, and get much more optimized results while searching about bike resale in Bangalore for instance. However, another problem with that is the user has to be aware where the stuff he is searching on is available, if he does not want to lose time switching the options. Since most of the popular websites are hosted outside India, searching for Facebook, for instance, in the 'India' section of Bing will turn nothing but a futile exercise.
Ironically enough, one will get better results about India not via India specific option, but through 'show all' section on Bing because Wikipedia is accessible via the latter option.
It was reported that Microsoft allocated $80 to $100 million dollars to build the brand name Bing. To put the amount in perspective, one must know that Google had spent only $25 million for its all ad campaigns in 2008. And naturally, Bing is fast catching up with its competitors in terms of market share as Alexa.com, a website that ranks websites across the world, listed Bing.com as the 15th most used website during the past one week. Just one week after its launch, Bing is already the second most popular search engine in the U.S. and worldwide except the U.K., according to StatCounter Global Stats.

IIT Kanpur to launch Jugnu, the lightest nano satellite of India

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur carries out original research of significance and technology development at the cutting edge. It imparts training for students to make them competent, motivated engineers and scientists. The Institute not only celebrates freedom of thought, cultivates vision and encourages growth, but also inculcates human values and concern for the environment and the society.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur has come in to agreement with ISRO to launch a nano satellite. It will be the country's lightest and the institute's first satellite to be launched in the orbit from Sriharikota.

IIT Kanpur had presented the second design review to ISRO which nodded to launch the satellite.
"Though the memorandum of understanding between ISRO and IIT-K for the project was signed in February, regular review sessions are being carried out by ISRO to check the progress of the project," said Sanjay Govind Dhande, Director, IIT Kanpur.
"On Tuesday, our technical team working on the project apprised ISRO authorities of the release and antenna mechanism," he said.In April, the first review of Jugnu was carried out by ISRO.
Since last December, a team of 40 students and around 12 professors, led by Professor and Mechanical Engineering Department Head, Nalinaksh S Vyas have been working on the project.
"A similar project in any European country would have cost over Rs 10 crore but we expect the entire project to complete within a budget of Rs 2-3 crore, without compromising on quality. This is a welcome signal for indigenous remote sensing technologies," said Vyas.
A technical team led by D Madhav Murthy in the ISRO for Small Satellite, has said that the procedures for informing the ISRO officials for launch by a mother satellite has been provided, along with the details of the positioning of the satellite antenna set up in the institute premises.
Jugnu weighs around 3.5 kgs and would be 34 cm long and 10 cm wide. Equipped with the micro imaging and micro electronic system, it will transfer the images to the IIT Kanpur campus. The high resolution pictures obtained will be used for different applications like drought monitoring, wasteland management, urban planning and flood risk management.
